| Jammer Considerations
Mobile phone jamming is illegal in many countries for very good
reason, unless it is carefully controlled,
mayhem will ensue. We have compiled various items for the
potential jammer to consider. TEMPEST A jammer is a transmitter and therefore it's introduction into a secure facility may actually make it easier for an attacker to reconstitute compromising emanations than it would be performing a TEMPEST attack on a mobile phone itself, this is taken into consideration when our consultants select products and recommend siting positions for your jammer. See our TEMPEST page. Health & Safety There have been many reports about the safety issues that allegedly surround the use of mobile phones, a jammer not only uses the same frequencies, transmits continuously but also uses higher power levels than mobile phones. Our lead consultant in this field is a qualified non-ionising radiation safety supervisor and recommends the use of reactive jammers that only transmit for a short period when a mobile phone is used. Proactive, constantly transmitting jammers will only be recommended where the business case is sufficient to warrant them. Inconsideration When you prevent the use of mobile phones it is imperative that the effects are only realised within your controlled space. Power levels vary considerably between jammers and therefore selecting and siting the appropriate jammer is crucial. Our consultants will ensure that the effects of jamming does not extend beyond where they are needed, or the extent of your property. RadHaz Many locations are not suited to jammers, generally these are locations where mobile phones are not permitted for safety reasons, such as within hospitals and fuel stores. Ethics There have been occasions where mobile phone jammers have been used in order for premises to extort higher call rates through phone systems, Computer Network Defence will only assist in the installation of jammers where there is an ethical business case. Alternatives An alternative to Jamming is shielding where the extremities of a room are coated with an RF absorbing material such as paint or wallpaper, we are working on a page that provides details on such products. By far the ultimate solution is a Faraday cage though prices reflect their performance.
